The 5th generation of consoles was a time of great innovation, though that was in large part because developers didn’t necessarily know what to do with three dimensional space yet. Many studios pushed boundaries, effectively creating new genres, contributing to the very foundations of the contemporary gaming landscape.
Tenchu really could have benefited from some of those foundations.
Tenchu was on the cusp of so many brilliant ideas for its time. Playing as a sneaky ninja with a bag of equippable tricks! Cool assassinations with blood splatter! There’s a grappling hook! And all of that would have been amazing had it not been brutally upstaged by Metal Gear Solid and Thief also releasing in the year of our lord 1998.
